Created to Shine Bright

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 MSG

As a naive 19 year old, a sophomore in college, I had my whole life planned out in front of me.  I knew what I wanted to study, what I wanted to do for my job, and the type of life I was going to have.  God took a wrecking ball to all my carefully laid out plans on my first mission trip.

On my first mission trip, I felt God’s call on my life.  For the first time, I realized, God had a specific plan and purpose for my life.  That I had been created to do something.  I never knew what that something was until that first mission trip.

It was the first time I stepped out of my comfort zone to serve others.

It was the first time I set aside a week to put the needs of others before my own.

It was the first time I had an orphan walk up to me and hold my hand.

It was the first time I realized how “rich” I truly want by living in the United States.

It was the first time I shared my testimony with others.

It was the first time for so many other things in my life.  But it was not the last.

There was a subtle but significant shift in my life.  A reorientation around God’s purposes.  From me, myself, and I to God the Father, Jesus the son and the holy spirit.  From my will to “your will be done”.  Realizing that I had been created by God for a purpose.  There was destiny flowing in my DNA.

This must have been what the disciples felt when they heard these words from Jesus “You are the light of the world.”

I want you to hear those same words are you serve orphaned and vulnerable children.  God created you to be light in a dark world.  God made you for this reason.  God has prepared good works for you to do while sponsoring a child or volunteering at a shelter or serving on a mission trip.

Don’t be afraid.  Don’t be anxious.  Don’t be nervous.  Don’t be worried.  You were made to do this.  You’re most fully alive when you are doing the things God has created you to do.  Go and shine bright.

I’m not afraid.  I was made for this.  - Joan of Arc
